ASCA Observations of NLS1s: BH Mass Estimation from X-ray Variability and X-ray Spectra

چکیده

ASCA observations of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are presented. We focus on the black hole size of the NLS1 sources by employing two independent methods for the mass estimation; one is using X-ray variability, the other is using a blackbody fit to the soft component. Although the coincidence is not good for some sources, the mass estimated by these methods ranges from 10 to 10 M⊙, systematically smaller than those for typical (broad line) Seyfert 1. We consider the small mass black hole to be the principal cause of the several extreme characteristics of the NLS1s.

On X-ray variability in narrow line and broad line AGNs

We assembled a sample of broad line and narrow lines AGNs observed by ASCA, whose excess variances have been determined. The central black hole masses in this sample can be obtained from the reverberation mapping method and the width of Hβ emission line. Using the black hole masses and the bolometric luminosity, the Eddington ratio can also be obtained. We confirmed the strong anti-correlation ...

Timing Analysis of Light Curves in the Tartarus Active Galactic Nuclei Database

The Tartarus database contains products for 529 ASCA observations of active galactic nuclei. We have been updating Tartarus to include observing sequences conducted after 1999 January. The revised database will contain products for 375 objects, with a total of 614 observing sequences. We have begun a systematic timing analysis of the Tartarus light curves. We present here some preliminary resul...

RE J 2248 - 511 - Not all variable , ultrasoft , X - ray AGN have narrow Balmer lines

We present ASCA data on RE J2248-511, extending existing optical and soft X-ray coverage to 10 keV, and monitoring the soft component. These data show that, despite a very strong ultrasoft X-ray excess below 0.3 keV and a soft 0.3–2 keV spectral index in earlier ROSAT data, the hard X-ray spectrum (α ∼ −0.8; 0.6-10 keV) is typical of type 1 AGN, and the soft component has since disappeared. Opt...

A Complete Sample of Soft X-ray Selected AGN: II. Statistical Analysis

Direct correlations and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are presented for a complete sample of 110 soft X-ray selected AGN of which about half are Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). The direct correlation analyses show that narrower FWHM(Hβ) correlates with steeper X-ray spectrum, stronger optical FeII emission, weaker [OIII] emission and stronger short-term X-ray variability. This di...

Spectral variability of Ultra Luminous Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Using the X-ray data taken with ASCA, a detailed analysis was made of intensity and spectral variations of three ultra-luminous extra-galactic compact X-ray sources (ULXs); IC 342 source 1, M81 X-6, and NGC 1313 source B, all exhibiting X-ray luminosity in the range 2 × 10–1.5 × 10 erg s−1. As already reported, IC 342 source 1 showed short-term X-ray intensity variability by a factor of 2.0 on ...
